Selection criteria for threaded fittings
The selection of threaded fittings for metal pipes is based on the following criteria:
- Type of fitting;
- Material of manufacture;
- Its parameters.
The type of fitting is selected depending on its purpose in the pipeline system. Distinguish:
- Tees, which are used for tapping additional branches into the pipeline;
- Elbows designed to change the direction of pipes;
- Couplings, with the help of which pipes are joined on a flat surface of the line, if it is necessary to increase the length;
- Bends. They cut in additional branches at an angle of 30º – 180º;
- Plugs designed to temporarily or permanently cut off a certain part of the system;
- Nipples. Installed in the pipeline when it is necessary to connect pipes of different diameters;
- Fittings required to connect additional equipment (hoses, hoses, etc.).
Another important parameter when choosing fittings is the material of manufacture. Currently, threaded pipe fittings can be made from the following materials:
- Cast iron.
Steel fittings are notable for their low cost, a sufficient level of tightness and the possibility of repeated use. The only significant drawback of such fasteners is their susceptibility to corrosion. Due to this fact, steel fittings are not recommended for use in the construction of pipelines for drinking water supply, heating or transportation of aggressive media.
To eliminate susceptibility to corrosion, stainless steel has recently been used for the manufacture of fittings. Stainless connectors are more expensive but can last longer.
Stainless steel fittings malaysia are more in demand, as they perfectly combine parameters such as price and quality. The cost of brass fittings is not much higher than steel fittings, but the resistance to corrosion, durability and resistance to aggressive environments completely cover this factor.
Cast iron fittings have the longest service life. With proper care, they can last up to 80 years. Copper and bronze fittings can be used for the construction of pipelines for water supply, heating, drainage, air exchange, transportation of liquids in the chemical and oil refining industry, and so on. A significant disadvantage of this type of connecting elements is their high cost.
After installing the fitting, the system is checked for leaks. For this, the pipeline is filled with water and the maximum working pressure is created. The detected leak is repaired by sealing the connection, tightening the fitting, or reinstalling the connector.
